Still life is the genre in which the painter works most freely with light and colour. Every work in this section is oil on canvas.
The subjects are simple and familiar: fruit on a dish, a porcelain jug, a glass decanter, flowers in a vase. The interest is in the arrangement — red apples set against a patterned blue cloth, the pink of a watermelon pulling a whole composition together, or light passing through glass in a dark-toned picture.
Several of the paintings are built specifically on light and shade: candlelight, a beam falling from one side, bright patches thrown across a table. Works like these make a warm, quiet point in a room, and are most often chosen for living rooms and kitchens.
